Championship Information

Team Event

On April 28, 2019 at the Palo Alto Bridge Center, high school students from six schools gathered to play in the team event of the fifth Bay Area High School Bridge Championship.

tbdSix teams played in a round robin of five rounds of five boards each to determine which teams would advance to the finals. At the end of the morning session, Lynbrook High School came out on top in the round robin. Monta Vista High School finished second.  After lunch, these two teams advanced and faced off in a twentyfour board match while most players who did not advance competed in the championship pairs game.

After the first half, Monta Vista was in the lead.  In the end Lynbrook prevailed.


Playing for Lynbrook were Arthur Zhou, David Zheng, Michael Hu, and Michael Zheng.


Monta Vista, the 2nd place finishers, comprised of Aman Desai, Benjamin Smentek, Richard Liu, and Ricky Schroeder.

Pairs Event

Players from teams that did not qualify for the semi-finals and players from schools with an insufficient number of students to form a team competed in the afternoon in the Pairs Championship.


Twelve pairs participated from twelve different high schools. Jonathan Shi and Lucas Huang from Gunn High School placed first with an impressive 74.44%.
In second were Michael Xu from Gunn High School and Jonathan Yue from Leland High School


Third place went to Quan Nguyen from Palo Alto High School and Winston Li from Valley Christian High School.

Elijah Schacter from Gunn High School and Madison Sayler-Tait from Leland High School won the Newcomer Pair award.

Michael Xu won the t-shirt design contest.



The Bay Area High School Bridge Championship was sponsored by Silicon Valley Youth Bridge along with Peninsula Youth Bridge.

First place prizes were awarded in memory of Belle Bestor, a life-long bridge player who inspired her children to become Life Masters.

Special appreciation is due to volunteer tournament director Will Watson, as well as Qing Lu, who put together a fabulous lunch for players and volunteers alike.
